Christian Meyer is a composer of sounds, music, images, videos, installations, and writings.
Born in Brussels, Belgium, Christian Meyer moved to Berlin in the late 80s where he became involved in the alternative art scene as a self-taught musician.
His studies in the humanities at the Free University of Berlin (FU Berlin) led him to an intensive exploration of psychoanalysis and a diploma thesis on nightmares in early childhood. This investigation into the unconscious has significantly influenced his artistic work to this day, with a particular interest in what lies beneath the surface and shapes our consciousness.
For more than 25 years, Christian Meyer’s success as a musician and composer is recognized in the genres of film, advertising, and dance theatre. Starting as a guitarist, he evolved into a composer and live musician for dance theatre worldwide collaborating with among others Felix Ruckert, Arthur Kuggeleyn, Sue Schroder. His first film score for the movie "Alaska.de" earned him with MoserMeyerDöring the award for Best Film Music from the Association of German Film Critics. Many more compositions for movies, series and documentaries succeeded. In the years that followed, he also received several awards for his music and sound work in advertising, including ADC, VDW, Die Klappe, New York Festival, Finalist Cannes Lion.
Christian Meyer is a composer whose style is influenced by a melancholic and minimalist sound, characterized by an experimental, poetic, and avant-garde approach. Over the course of his career, he has continuously developed his musical technique, skillfully moving between electronic sounds, orchestral arrangements, and sound design.
His collaborations with musicians like Rudolf Moser (Einstürzende Neubauten), Roger Döring, Ulrike Haage (Rainbirds), Oliver Doerell (Dictaphone), and Stefan Wöhrmann (SWOD) led to worldwide concerts and performances, including playing for Chiharu Shiota's large-scale installation at König Galerie (Berlin).
The traumatic accidental death of his father in 2009 intensified his interest in photography as a medium to uncover the traces of this trauma. His first photographic series, "Missing," portrays a world marked by the absence of his father in his hometown of Dorfmark. This "absence of humanity" runs through Christian's entire body of photography. Similar to his music, he uses his raw images and then processes them digitally, creating minimalist visual worlds that seem to spring from dreams while simultaneously conveying silent narratives. His photos are visual discoveries, capturing details that catch his attention. From this, he sensitively reveals themes such as melancholy, loneliness, and travel, inviting the viewer to discover the mysterious, the obscure, and the beauty in the hidden.
With his animated photography, he continues his artistic exploration by blending images with sound and music compositions. His videos are meditative still lifes, often structured as triptychs that capture different facets of a moment, offering a unique perspective.
Christian Meyer's art does not shy away from pursuing a decorative aesthetic. A search for harmony, for beauty, is at the centre of his works. Form, light, lines, and reflections, as well as melody and rhythm, are balanced with the quiet and emotional stories that the images and sounds embrace and then reveal. His art is crafted to engage the audience and integrate seamlessly into their surroundings.
With his recent “The Dream Diaries," he continues his artistic journey radically. Open, honest, and vulnerable, dream formation serves as the source of his creativity, blurring the boundaries between dream and reality, and enabling a genuinely honest expression of himself.
